The Roly-Poly is a 1997 Japan-domestic handmade topwater lure from an artisan maker. The lure's rounded, bulbous body imitates a pillbug, beetle larva, or cicada nymph - terrestrial insects that form a significant part of the surface forage base in Japan's rivers, streams, and lake margins during summer and autumn - presented in a bright opaque chartreuse finish with black bead eyes and a hand-cut genuine leather tail strip that introduces a trailing, breathing movement on the pause that no manufactured rubber or feather tail can replicate.
The Roly-Poly is presented in a teal and yellow vintage-style presentation box declaring "Handmade Lure - Unmatched Action", a confident statement from an artisan maker whose individual craftsmanship is the only production process. Each Roly-Poly was made by hand and no two examples are identical, placing this 1997 NIB example at the intersection of Japanese artisan lure craft, vintage collector interest, and complete Western market obscurity - three qualities that rarely coexist in a single piece.
